Biography
Professor Bulus Ajiya Sawa is a distinguished climatologist, climate change expert, researcher, and academic leader with decades of experience in teaching, research, environmental management, and disaster risk reduction. He is a Professor in the Department of Geography and Environmental Management at Ahmadu Bello University and is widely recognized as one of Nigeria's leading authorities in climate change studies.
Professor Sawa obtained a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Geography, a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE), and a Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Climatology from Ahmadu Bello University. He subsequently earned a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Climatology from Federal University of Technology, Yola, further strengthening his expertise in climate science and environmental sustainability.
As the only Professor of Climate Change in the Department of Geography and Environmental Management at Ahmadu Bello University at the time of the profile, Professor Sawa has made significant contributions to climate change research, environmental planning, and disaster risk management. Since 2009, he has served as the Pioneer Coordinator of the Training and Outreach Unit at the University's Centre for Disaster Risk Management, where he has played a key role in advancing capacity building, climate resilience, and disaster preparedness initiatives.
An accomplished scholar, Professor Sawa has authored more than seventy peer-reviewed journal articles, numerous conference papers, and several book chapters focusing on climate change, climatology, environmental management, disaster risk reduction, and sustainable development. His extensive body of research has contributed significantly to scientific knowledge and policy discourse on climate adaptation and resilience in Nigeria and beyond.
Professor Sawa is also an outstanding postgraduate mentor and supervisor. Between 2010 and 2025, he successfully supervised and graduated twenty-five Ph.D. candidates, five M.Phil. candidates, and eighty-nine M.Sc. students in climate change and related disciplines, demonstrating his enduring commitment to developing the next generation of scholars and researchers.
His professional expertise has been sought by national and international organizations through numerous sponsored research projects and consultancy assignments. He has served as a Climate Change Expert Consultant for the United Nations Development Programme and ENVIPLAN Limited under the Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP), as well as a Climate Change Expert Consultant for the Federal Ministry of Water Resources, the African Development Bank Group, and ENVIPLAN International Limited on the development of Nigeria's Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Investment Plan.
Beyond academia and research, Professor Sawa is committed to community development and public service. He currently serves as the Chairman of the Garkida Development Association, where he continues to provide leadership in advancing community development and promoting sustainable environmental practices.
