Biography
Professor Ashiru Sani is a distinguished historian, scholar, researcher, and academic administrator with extensive expertise in history, conflict studies, security studies, governance, and nation-building. He currently serves as a Professor in the Department of History and War Studies at the Nigerian Defence Academy, following many years of impactful service at Kaduna State University.
With decades of experience in teaching, research, supervision, and academic leadership, Professor Sani has established himself as a respected voice in the areas of Nigerian history, security studies, military history, ethno-religious conflicts, governance, and socio-political development in Africa.
He earned a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in History from Bayero University, a PGDE from Kaduna Polytechnic, and subsequently obtained both his Master's and PhD degrees in History from the Postgraduate School of the Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna.
Professor Sani's academic career spans teaching at the College of Education Azare, Kaduna Polytechnic, and Kaduna State University before joining the Nigerian Defence Academy in 2025. He has authored and co-authored numerous publications covering conflict management, Nigerian military history, governance, migration, insecurity, ethno-religious relations, urbanisation, and cultural studies in Northern Nigeria.
He has supervised undergraduate, Master's, and PhD research projects in political history, security studies, socio-economic development, foreign policy, and military-civil relations. He has also served as an external examiner and reviewer for postgraduate programmes at the Nigerian Defence Academy and other institutions.
He has held key positions including Head of Department of History at Kaduna State University, Departmental Postgraduate Coordinator, Editor-in-Chief of the Kaduna Journal of Humanities, and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Historical Studies.
Beyond academia, Professor Sani is engaged in community development, educational advocacy, youth mentorship, and civic discourse on security, governance, and national development across media platforms.
